E-commerce stocks fall during a busy week of earnings releases
The Internet Retailer Online Retail Index fell 1.4% last week, underperforming the broader market. But such e-commerce heavyweights at Amazon, eBay and Overstock made impressive gains after reporting quarterly earnings.
The 25-stock index of e-commerce firms fell faster last week than the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which was off .7%, or the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index, which fell .4%.
However eBay, Amazon.com and Overstock.com all made strong gains for the week after they reported quarterly earnings. Netflix fell despite a strong earnings report, as analysts worried that the online video rental company faces stronger competition. Even with the 12.5% decline for the week, the stock price of Netflix is up a hefty 74% since Jan. 1.
Ten of the stocks in the Online Retail Index advanced last week, 14 declined in price and LivePerson was unchanged.
